1Peter 1-5;v3-4. Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade-kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.
The relevance of those words “It is finished” that Jesus said on the cross has resounded for centuries without any understanding of what it really means. Why?
I think there is two meanings to why Jesus said these three words. Let’s start with maybe a missed understanding of what he said. If one of my children are given a task to do for me, it is their responsibility to come to me and tell me that the task is done that I requested. This is the small, but huge item that we have failed to see that Jesus was sent on a task in this world to do from His father and tho it was a task of over thirty three years. It wasn’t until He was on the cross about to die(which was apart of His task to do,so that the Holy Spirit would be indwelt in us) when He cried “It is finished”. He’s task was done. He told His father He had finished his request. His Father was pleased.
God’s work through His son was completed. His message was presented to the world of who He was,How we are now of Him,and Him to us. Christ’s resurrection was the “effect” of God’s life being represented by Jesus Christ the “cause”.
Statement: God/Christ has done the task, and it is finished. Why are we then trying to finish it.
He has given us a new birth! This is the exclamation that is in verse 3. This is the picture we see in Genesis 1-2, a new birth in a new life. If we have died to the old world we are now apart of this new world/kingdom with a new life. Our life has been sanctified by the work of the spirit with just our understanding of Christ’s eternal life to overwhelm us by His love.
May we realize that God’s work through His Son is finished, realize now that we have that eternal life with the Triune God.
