Kingdom of God

People have their own thoughts on what it actually means when we say “Kingdom of God”.

But what does it mean? If we just start with the face value of the statement, we should get a pretty clear view of what it is. Let’s start with the first word, Kingdom. What does ‘kingdom’ mean? Dictionary defines it as “(Government, Politics & Diplomacy) a territory, state, people, or community ruled or reigned over by a king or queen”. This by definition is what we are talking about when we discuss the things of the old testament and the new testament.

In the old testament, the paradigm of a kingdom was that of the gentiles was the ruling military or political party that controlled the land by setting the laws and ideals for everyone. It was different for the Jewish people of Israel, their Kingdom was that of a ‘City’ Kingdom with their God as their King and their ways were of their God. It was like a microcosm of a larger model of the whole earth.

It was a reproduction of shadow from times past, one from the beginning of time, ‘Garden of Eden. It was a time of innocence and beauty of the creator and his creation. It was the paradigm of God’s ultimate eternal purpose.

Now, for the second word, God. Kingdom of God, this is possessive phrase of someone’s possession, a Kingdom. Kingdom of God, a kingdom which God rules, with His paradigm of rule. It is his right, by the mere fact of his creating the said world and putting all things below him. God’s desire for a people to be His people that would be of Him, and He in them. It is the true fulfilling of Love and Life.

Where should this lead us?

It is the acclamation of God’s creation. How then should we be doing or saying or living because of this? What is it that we should do? If we are to be apart of this ‘Kingdom’ we shall be apart of it. We shall be apart of it thru the ‘being’ which created it in his image of all things made of Love and Life.

Has ‘OUR’ identity gotten in the way?

Do you remember back in the 80’s when the good ole saying was bantered about, this generation is the ‘ME’ generation? I wonder if it is stuck in a loop still playing?

You see, It has broadened even further from this identity, that we are now including out identity of who we ‘think’ we are. Our ‘essence’ of who we are is important to us so much, that we want it to be out front and center to be the focus of our world. Why are we doing this? Why do we perceive that the piece is greater than the whole?

I can see this in the secular world, where they are trying to stand out from the world around them, to be different. It is the natural reaction to try and find yourself and to show it off. Mankind, once it thought it was the best ruler for the world, it knew it has to continually try to prove itself to our self that it is still true.

It is when the christian community tries to follow suit with its counterpart to fit in to that mold that has got me worried. You see in the scriptures it tells us that ‘we’ have died with Christ in His death, as a man, to it’s ways and now lives in the ways of Christ and God. We are different. We are different from the World. We are not of ourselves, but of Christ.Christ was what was resurrected that day on the hill. It was something greater than the world, it was different. It was better. It was unique, it was Holy,, and it was of God.

God, chose to cancel out the human model of the world, and was/is bringing in His total and complete and Holy New Creation presiding over it himself. He is the King, we are His people, and the world is His Kingdom.

Which leads us to the christian model of our ‘identity’, as ourselves and to the world. If we are not of ourselves, we are in Christ, which would make us like him. This transformation into the ‘likeness’ of Christ/God fits very well into the beginning of the Genesis story in chapter one verse 26. We are to be the likeness of God. This is the identity that we seek as man. But it has not transposed this way, in the christian realm, it has transposed itself into the world’s likeness, a reverting back into darkness.

So, What has to change? This verse comes to mind-Romans 12.2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect…

Let me add on these other verses to strengthen the identity and image of ‘Us’ in Christi.

Romans 12.3 For through the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think; but to think so as to have sound judgment, as God has allotted to each a measure of faith

Romans 12.4 For just as we have many parts in one body and all the body’s parts do not have the same function

Romans 12.5 so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually parts of one another.

I don’t know about you but this seems to be a identity of God that I would want to be ‘apart’ of! Our identity in Christ is one that is greater and Holier than I could ever be or create as a human. It is this one thing in ‘christianity’ that I feel that has messed up our theology and our uniqueness in the world as ‘that light’ upon the hill!

Being Christ, by being ‘IN’ Him, and He ‘IN’ Us is the formula that is missing in this world of ours!

Let me again say that our understanding of what the Cross and Resurrection was really about that has had made us go down the wrong path of God’s intention. God died for sin,re-created mankind in Christ as a ‘New Creation’ to start the Holy People, Holy Kingdom, and Holy God. All we have to do is to “be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.”

Now that’s an ‘IDENTITY’!!!!!
