Opposites?

I stumbled on to something today, while studying something else.

It is always like that with me, I will be researching some theme, word, or story in the scriptures and I ‘see’ something else that relates to some other story or theme. All tho it gets me sidetrack from my original studies, I welcome an ‘AHA’ moment anytime!

Everyone knows what it means by using ‘opposites’ in a conversation, right? When you tell some one directions to a restaurant either to turn right or left at the corner of 2nd street, or you tell them that the earth is round, and they say it is flat, or that things are either black or white. It is an ‘either or’ kind of thing.

Now, sometimes we might go just by our ‘assuming’ of what is read by the first condition of a supposedly either or statement, because we are used to it.

I think we may have done this with actually a statement in the bible, and used it throughout the bible as a definite presupposition. It comes in Genesis 2: 9 Out of the ground the LORD God caused to grow every tree that is pleasing to the sight and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Let’s look at this, starting with the second part of the verse, The tree of Life is in the midst of the garden and the tree of knowledge of good and evil is too. Did you see any opposite statements in that narrative? Neither did I.

In fact, there wasn’t anything that looked close to it. It was like it said “life and Knowledge” as the basic message of it. We have to start with the first statement of that there was “a Tree of Life, for this to be an “opposite’ scenario the last condition of the statement had to say “a Tree of Death”. But it doesn’t.

This is actually an avenue of ‘self acknowledgment ‘or ‘self identity’. This avenue, which if we break it down is one of the precursors of what we of society have called the period of time as “The Enlightenment” period where we have gone outside the realm of God and chose a realm of our own. This could be first ‘sign’ of the ‘individualistic narrative that was introduced into the gospel, altho it has always pointed to the ‘NT’ period for that. We can use this ‘use of knowledge of good and evil’ as a spiraling to the opposite of good, especially with a dose of ‘evil’. Nothing good usually comes with playing with evil, pun intended.

Let’s start with the obvious, (This here is exactly what I talk about is the issue of ‘the lack of biblical knowledge’ of the christians) I have used in my studies the ‘opposite’ method of some of my thinking. If we have been ‘offered’ a ‘Tree of good and evil’ for your use, then that would mean you didn’t have it to begin with, right. So God is giving you the ability to have it to use. I don’t know if we would understand the ‘concept of good and evil’ but for the sake of the argument let’s say we do. Satan says later, “that we are the same as God if have this knowledge of good and evil.” Digging deep into God’s world can and should lead us to the inner Spirit of His intentions. But in basic language, we have chosen to go on our own.

Now I know what you are going to say. That by knowing the things that have been said in the scriptures that ‘Our not choosing the Tree of Life’, automatically means “Death”. We have to take this argument just one more step deeper to find the ‘Truth’. Sometimes we can find the ‘Truth’ by what it doesn’t say. Yup.

Wouldn’t God if He was to give an ‘ultimatum'(this is what it is), He would of just said, “Do you want to pick an ‘apple from the tree of Life or the apple from the Tree of Death? If you want to go deeper still, if this would of been the question, I am thinking two things, one if I had chosen ‘Tree of Death’, wouldn’t I have been stricken dead instantly! Two, Who in their right mind would of not chose ‘Life’. (assuming we knew what life and death actually meant, yes this comes into play).

The Narrative of the story continues, which just all by itself, should tell us something. Did you ‘hear’ it? Did you ‘see’ it?

This scenario of the second tree, the ‘Tree of good and evil’ is an open ended scenario. There is that road that will get us back to the “Tree of Life”. Road back. Now, if you realize that it wasn’t you or me that built that road, It was already there. Then we must realize that the God of Creation built it.

Now, I don’t know if that road was yellow(OZ) or not, but I somehow think it might be stained with the color of ‘Red’.

Chaos, Light

The first two verses of Genesis are usually are just read over without any understanding of theologically ramifications. It seems that we only ‘see’ the first verse as ‘God created the heavens and the earth’. It is the second verse(which ironically a key to other theological issues down the road-#2) “The earth was without form and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep; and the Spirit of God was moving over the face of the waters.”

Let’s bring in verse 1, to see something else. “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” God is a powerful God. God creates things. He creates things for His pleasure. His desire is to have fellowship with the trinity(Father,Son,Holy Spirit) but also of a creation that He is ‘well pleased’ in the making. This is evident in the making of the earth, in that in each step he took, God says that it was ‘good’. Everything that God made was ‘good’ in his eyes, this was his standard.

Now, let’s go back to verse 2 and continue the story and proclamations of it. The ‘earth was without form’, I don’t think anybody really knows what this looked like, but we know it didn’t look like anything we have now as what we see the earth from afar. But just to say it was without form, is to say it wasn’t organized or planned in any way. “The earth was without void”, it was ‘nothing’. Nothing to speak about.

And to add the last of verse 2 is “the darkness was upon the face of the deep”, so, just like the earth, the face of the deep was dark, or without ‘light’. Finally, ” and the Spirit of God was moving over the face of the waters”. Now we must realize in this segment, the ‘waters’ of the earth had not been formed yet. This waters was the upcoming waters to be created. But let’s backup a minute, and look at this even more to what this is.

We all know that ‘hindsight is 20/20′, but in this case foresight is 20/20’, you see we have read the scriptures and know what has been said about various things of what things represent in God’s world and actions of Him or His Son. There is meaning to everything. “Water” is used in a few different ways. It is said to be “Bad”,”Evil”,”Dark” or it is also said to be “Good”,”Spiritual”,Or “Light”. In this instance it is an connotation that the ‘waters’ are ‘dark’, or evil. But it is in transition, because the Spirit of the Lord was moving over it give it the ‘Good’ or ‘Light’ quality that it needed coming from the darkness.

Our knowing when things are in the dark or in the light is a main concept of the Word of God. It is used in the old and the new testament. Another concept that is used throughout the bible is the one of ‘Life’ and ‘Death’, This is in conjunction with the darkness and light theme in the scriptures. As we can see just from these two examples the topics are opposites from each other. It is a either or picture. These are the themes that are re-occurring in the scriptures that are important for us to use in our overall emphasis of God’s desire of having The Kingdom of Heaven.

LIFE

Do we not understand what LIFE is?

A very simple explanation of life is it is the opposite of death! Now what is death? Are automatic response is the physical death of our body. We need to understand that this is also in relationship to our spiritualness in our Spirit.

When we chose the tree of the “knowledge of Good and Evil”  this was the choice of the opposite of “the tree of Life”, so by default the tree of “knowledge of Good and Evil” is death. God’s tree of Life is one that is designed for God’s creation, man and his creator.

Man’s desire to control his ‘life’ was never intended. The creation is never greater than the creator. God’s design was to ‘live’,commune, with his creation. Mankind is ‘King’. We are in charge of our realm, we are all knowing, we can fix it, make it better and or great, we can salvage what ever comes up when something goes wrong.

Are we missing something? What does ‘life’ mean? Is it temporary, is it forever, eternal? What is it? Does it depend on us, or does it come from outside us? The word ‘Life’ is used in our society as a measuring stick to differentiate between ‘being’ or ‘death’. Could this be the issue? Has our notion that our ‘life’ is just ‘being’ that is what it is all about? Or is it that we are not ‘dead’ that what we are?

Generations have struggled to define or ‘know’ what life was in their religious or secular world. It’s that uncertainty or that just aloofness of mankind that we can figure it out one day that we just don’t worry about it.

It could be that mankind has substituted that ‘life’ with idols of our realm that we have made for ourselves that we strive for everyday in every way. We have made them our ‘life’. It is what we are always striving for, every day for all our lives, until our death is in sight, then we ‘see’ what we thought was ‘life’ was not ‘life’ but ‘death’, in that it had captured us and had us in  it’s grip. We weren’t experiencing ‘life’, we are a slave to our creation of idols, death, something that is opposite that we were striving for.

So, where do you we go from here? Maybe we need to realize what the meaning of ‘Death’ is?
